Spotify has introduced a new feature on the music streaming platform and it’s called Jam. In a blog post, the company says that it is a “personalized, real-time listening session for your group to tune into together”. Jam enables you to invite other people on Spotify to a queue of songs who can add tracks to the list. With this feature, if there is a group of people in a room listening to songs together, everyone can contribute to what’s playing on the speaker.
How does Spotify Jam work?
To use Jam, select a song or a playlist, and then tap on the speaker icon at the bottom of the screen. The app will show you an option that says “Start a Jam”. Once you select it, Spotify will create a queue of songs, and you’ll be able to invite other people to it by sharing the link to the queue with them any way you want, having them scan a QR code that the app can show on your phone’s screen, or just by tapping your phone with theirs (with Bluetooth enabled).
Your friends and family who have joined the queue can then add songs to the list. You and other people with access to the queue can also see who has added which song to the queue. Additionally, you can change the order of the tracks and even remove a song from the list if you think that it doesn’t fit the vibe. The app will allow you to play the songs in the shared queue either on your phone’s speaker or any other audio device nearby through Spotify Connect.
Only Spotify Premium users can start a Jam
You’ll be able to start a Jam only if you are a Spotify Premium user. People without a paid subscription to the music streaming platform can only join a Jam and add songs to the list. It’s also worth mentioning that non-premium subscribers can join a Jam only if they are on the same Wi-Fi network. Spotify Premium users, on the other hand, can join a Jam remotely, listen to songs in the queue on their own audio devices, and be a part of the group virtually.
According to Spotify, Jam will be available globally starting today, and the company advises people to update the Spotify app on their devices to use the feature. Unfortunately, Spotify didn't specify on which platforms Jam will be available. We are expecting it to be available on Android and iOS at the least. So, make sure that you update Spotify on your Galaxy smartphone, tablet, or Windows 11-powered laptop before you go into the app searching for Jam.
