Update that brings new camera features to Galaxy S23 now live in the US

Yesterday, Samsung released the August 2023 security update to the Galaxy S23 series in the US. However, it was limited to the carrier-locked versions of the phones. Today, the company has released a new software update to the factory-unlocked models of Galaxy S23 series phones in the US.

Galaxy S23 August 2023 update: What's new?

The latest software update for the factory-unlocked Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra comes bearing firmware version S91xU1UEU1AWGH. This update is over 1.2GB in file size, and it brings several camera and gallery-related improvements. It brings a 2x zoom toggle in the stock Camera app via the Camera Assistant plugin. This new zoom option is an in-sensor crop and offers optical zoom-like image quality. Moreover, Samsung has brought AI Deep Learning-based digital zoom that it debuted with the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Z Fold 5 to the Galaxy S23 series, resulting in improved image quality for shots captured with digital zoom.

The Portrait Video mode has been improved, too, with videos recorded using Big Circle, Color Point, and Glitch effects now having a 30fps frame rate instead of 24fps. The Super Steady video recording mode has been improved, too, to offer improved details and smoothness. The selfie camera now offers a more natural face shape correction.

One of the major complaints that people have with cameras on Samsung phones is that they fail to capture sharp images of moving subjects (like kids and pets). Samsung says that the new update now offers better image quality when moving subjects are in the frame. Another camera-related issue on the Galaxy S23 series was called ‘bananagate,' and it referred to the blurriness of an object's borders when it is closer to the camera lens. The company claims to have solved that problem as well. Moreover, the quality of blur has been improved, and noise in the shadow areas of the frame has been reduced in 50MP and 200MP (Galaxy S23 Ultra) camera modes.
